Description
Mid-century Italian modernist grand-scale horizontal overmantel mirror in brass, Italy, circa 1950s, in the style of Gio Ponti.
Impressive in scale and proportion, the mirror is distinguished by its exceptionally wide, sculptural silhouette. Gently tapering sides flare outward toward the upper corners, while the softly rounded perimeter and subtly rising upper profile create an elegant sense of movement across its more than six-foot span.
At the center of the upper edge, the brass frame steps downward to accommodate a distinctive hand-formed crest composed of looping scrolls. This playful decorative element provides a delicate counterpoint to the otherwise restrained architectural form. The warm, richly patinated brass frame enhances the mirror’s sculptural character, while the combination of sweeping curves, attenuated proportions and whimsical detailing reflects the sophisticated vocabulary of postwar Italian modernism and the decorative traditions of Italian Novecento design. Retains its original solid wood backing.
With its commanding architectural presence, the mirror is particularly well suited above a large mantel, console or credenza, or as a statement piece in an entry hall, living room or dining room.
