Description
Pair of George III Giltwood Mirrors, in the Hepplewhite taste
English, circa 1785
The mirrors retain rectangular mercury glass plates within finely carved giltwood frames surmounted by elegant pierced crestings composed of urns, trailing husk ornament, and suspended oval medallions in the neoclassical taste. Delicate leafy branches and finely attenuated ornament lend the pair exceptional lightness and refinement.
Particularly appealing is the balance between the restrained simplicity of the main mirror plates and the delicacy of the carved upper elements, which introduce visual grace without excessive ornamentation. The design closely relates to published mirror patterns in George Hepplewhite’s Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide (pls. 116–117), particularly the use of suspended medallions, attenuated rectangular plates, and delicate neoclassical cresting ornament. Comparable examples are illustrated in Herbert F. Schiffer, The Mirror Book: English, American & European, 1983, p. 185, fig. 476.
The softly aged gilded surfaces further enhance the mirrors’ quiet sophistication and architectural character. Equally effective in traditional or contemporary interiors, the mirrors function as both decorative accents and architectural elements within a room. Their narrow proportions allow them to integrate easily into a variety of spaces while adding height, symmetry, and warmth.
