Description
This rare mahogany naval campaign chair is a lovely pure example of its type. Unlike most campaign furniture that has removable elements this example is hinged and may be folded flat, and was specifically designed for use aboard battleships of the eighteenth century.
Officer in the 18th century British Royal Navy supplied much of their on-board furniture, but when a ship of the line went into action, much of the furniture was sent overboard or was destroyed on decks by the deployment of cannons. This simple design, whereby the chair could be folded flat in an emergency and stored allowed for the preservation of the officer's property.
A rare, interesting and useful artifact. -
