Description
19th century Swedish folk art convertible chair-table.
Constructed from solid pine wood that operates via a manual hinge system to transition between a chair and a horizontal table. In the primary seating configuration, the backrest features six turned vertical spindles secured between straight horizontal rails, topped with rounded end finials. The seat consists of flat wooden planks designed to unfold forward, doubling the surface area to create a rectangular tabletop. These folding sections are adjoined by large, surface-mounted iron strap hinges. The main structure is supported by four partially turned legs integrated with an H-shaped lower stretcher. Curved iron brackets are bolted to the seat frame and backrest, providing structural tension and rigidity. When deployed as a table, the backrest pivots downward, utilizing the original top rail finials as secondary structural supports against the floor. ca 1800 Sweden.
