19th Century Settee / Canape, Durand, Louis XV, Giltwood, New Handwoven Scalamandre Upholstery.
A charming Louis the XV settee comprised of a stunningly carved 19th century giltwood settee from the French house of Gervais Durand, unsigned. The whole finely carved floral and wreath motifs with Greek key corners and elegant cabriole, turned up legs. Upholstery in need of repair. Priced accordingly. A pair of large Fauteuils sold separately. Frames are strong and sturdy.
Newly upholstered in Scalamandre hand woven fabric.
Gervais-Maximilien-Eugene Durand (French, 1839 - c. 1920) was best known for producing high quality furniture after important 18th Century makers including Adam Weisweiler and Jean-Henri Riesener. He established his firm Maison Durand in 1870 and won a silver medal in the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. After his son Frederic-Louis joined the firm in 1890 at which point the firm changed its name to 'Durand et Fils'. In 1920, upon Gervais Durand's death, Frederic-Louis took over the business and continued until 1934.
