A large Rococo revival carved giltwood sofa

This excellent antique piece is a large, French, late nineteenth century Rococo revival carved giltwood sofa. The sofa's frames are lavishly carved with scrolling acanthus foliage. Abundant ribbon-tied fruiting and foliate swags likewise adorn it. Other decorative elements include opposing pairs of foliate wrapped birds, as well as cabochons, Green Man masks, beaded pendants and gadrooning. The ornate backing is mounted with curved wings at the ends and above, the rail is surmounted by a central scrolled cartouche cresting. The piece stands on cabriole front legs and splayed square section rear legs.
