Description
This elegant pair of club chairs is an interesting bridge between the 20th century’s earlier artistic movements, like Art Deco, and the modernist movement that was about to shape much of Europe and Scandinavia’s furniture design for the following decades.
While the early days of mid-century modernism were still heavily influenced by the designs of the previous decades, the later years brought with them the more angular mid-century modern styles that are still increasing in popularity. This set has the best visual qualities of both stages, with traditional materials and a modern, structured look. The design recalls the chic Art Deco club chairs of the era. While initially the chair style was called a ‘comfortable chair’, it soon began to be known by its now famous moniker because of its popularity among clubs, allowing customers to sink into them with a drink. These chairs provide the same comfort thanks to their sizeable frames and fully upholstered bodies covered in an elegant, light fabric. An element that elevates the modern outline of these chairs is the upholstery: the luxuriously soft fabric is exquisite and pairs with the curvature very well. Like other examples of Art Deco, the backrests of these chairs are squared, as opposed to the predominantly rounded lines of later mid-century modern designs. This style creates elegant lines with a more structural, architectural look that is inherently stylish. Fulfilling the fundamental design principles of exceptional sitting support, the backs are tilted for utmost comfort. Quality craftsmanship was evidently of utmost importance for the cabinetmaker who created these chairs.
Club chairs continue to be highly sought after by collectors and interior designers to this day. Their timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship make them prized pieces of furniture that can add a touch of sophistication to any interior.
