Description
This sofas embody the clean lines and straightforward aesthetic characteristic of the mid-century era, while also incorporating elements that ensure both comfort and style. Their silhouettes are sleek and sophisticated, with a low profile that exudes a contemporary feel.
Throughout the 20th century, solid wood had been the most important furniture material. This is especially true for the mid-century era, during which natural wood was a staple in enhancing both the structural and visual aspect of furniture. These sofas were crafted for a hotel in Bali, Indonesia in the 1960s. Woodworking is an integral part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, with evidence of fine craftsmanship dating back centuries and a long tradition in furniture-making. These sofas embody comfort, while showcasing a balance of materials and proportions created with expert craftsmanship. The wooden frame is balanced in every sense of the word, with an airy back structure and bold seat and legs. The cabinetmaker’s fine sense of proportion, line tension and how skillfully they carried in the heritage of traditional design are all evident in this piece. The balance between surfaces - wood and fabric - is striking, as big wooden elements can be found on either side of the seats. Furthermore, the elegant, lightly textured upholstery of the seats and round back cushions beautifully complement the frames. The back cushions lay loose against the backrests, and can be easily removed depending on the sitter’s preference. The roundness of the pillows pairs beautifully with the grid-like pattern of the backrests, thus highlighting the geometric order of the design. This model can be placed in any environment to enhance the visual quality of its surroundings. The upholstery adds a modern edge to the natural wood, while keeping the mid-century look as the focus.
The historic movement of mid-century modern continues to permeate our sense of what’s contemporary. With a classic look, storied design and solid quality, these unique sofas are truly elegant and timeless, ideal as a statement piece thanks to their stylish colours and characteristic design.
