Description
This brass-mounted ceiling lamp by Hans Bergström for Ateljé Lyktan is a quintessential example of Scandinavian modern lighting. Bergström, founder and artistic director of Ateljé Lyktan, was instrumental in shaping Sweden’s post-war design identity through his emphasis on functional clarity, elegant proportions, and innovative use of materials.
Bergström’s designs epitomised the Scandinavian ideal of creating lighting that was both technically efficient and aesthetically harmonious, as can be seen in this piece. The lamp features a brass ceiling mount paired with a softly rounded opaline glass shade, designed to diffuse light evenly and create a warm, ambient glow. The glass form is subtly sculptural, with a slightly flattened dome that gently tapers at the base, giving it a sense of balance and weightlessness. The brass mount introduces a note of sophistication, its polished surface catching the light and complementing the soft translucence of the shade. Together, these elements reflect Bergström’s skill in uniting natural warmth and modern elegance, producing a piece that is understated yet striking in its presence.
As a work of Scandinavian mid-century modern design, this ceiling lamp embodies the enduring values of the movement: functionality, simplicity, and beauty achieved through restraint. Both practical and decorative, it remains a timeless piece that exemplifies Hans Bergström’s legacy and the craftsmanship of Ateljé Lyktan, making it as relevant in contemporary interiors as it was at the time of its creation.
