Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser "Kaminstolen" for Arnestad Bruk, Norway 1940s

$ 6,270
  • Description
    Designed in 1946 by Norwegian designers, Adolf Relling & Frederik Kayser, these so called “Kaminstolen” are a distinct pair thanks to their peculiar frame. The name can be roughly translated as “fireplace or stove chair”. Besides the unique look, these chairs’ manufacturer is also noteworthy as many of the Norwegian classic furniture pieces from the 1950s and 60s first saw the light of day at the furniture factory Arnestad bruk in Vollen.

    The fireplace chair as an expression refers to all kinds of chairs placed in front of fireplaces, connected by a single shared characteristic: their comfort. Here, comfort refers to both the ergonomic and visual aspect. Fireplace chairs usually come in pairs and feature an upholstered body designed for relaxing. The mahogany frames are very precisely crafted, showcasing the exciting angles and forms predominantly on the arms. At the same time, while there are numerous sharp angles and corners, the chairs still exude a cosy and welcoming appearance which is a result of the smoothed edges of the arms and legs. Both Relling and Kayser were of great importance for the functionalist furniture style in combination with traditional quality in terms of craftsmanship. These “kaminstolen” also stand out for the way in which the upholstered seats and backs are tightly incorporated into the design. The backrests are supported by the tapered legs that transcend into the wide back. For optimal relaxation, the armrests are widened in the middle with a concave angle to support the sitter’s arms. The elegant leather upholstery goes very well with the mahogany’s texture and colour, accentuating the tight design.

    With a tremendous sense of proportion, these sculpted chairs are very comfortable and fulfil their task to “serve well” and last for lifetimes. Kayser and Relling both became one of Norway’s most respected designers during the heyday of Scandinavian Design thanks to their design and architecture prowess. These chairs were manufactured by Møbelfabrikken Arnestad bruk AS, established in Vollen in 1941 on a shipbuilding tradition.
