Description
The Soriana Sofa and Ottoman by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina is one of the most celebrated icons of Italian Mid-Century Modern design. Originally introduced in 1969 and awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro, the Soriana redefined luxury seating by rejecting rigid forms in favor of generous, sculptural comfort. Today it remains one of the most sought-after vintage sofas for collectors, architects, and interior designers worldwide.
This exceptional four-seat example has been professionally restored by Hobbs Modern and newly upholstered in premium full-aniline leather in a rich oxblood hue. The leather possesses remarkable depth and warmth, allowing the natural character of the hide to remain visible while developing an even richer patina through years of use. The deep wine-colored leather pairs beautifully with the polished chrome steel frame, giving this Soriana an elegant yet commanding presence.
Unlike conventional sofas, the Soriana has no visible arms or rigid silhouette. Instead, its oversized cushions appear to billow effortlessly, gathered and restrained by the signature chrome-plated steel framework that wraps around the entire piece. This ingenious construction creates a striking balance between softness and structure—a hallmark of the Scarpas’ revolutionary approach to furniture design.
The generously scaled seat offers an exceptionally relaxed lounging experience. Thick cushions, subtle tufting, and low proportions invite hours of comfortable seating while the sculptural profile makes the sofa equally compelling from every angle. Whether viewed from the front, side, or rear, the Soriana reads as functional sculpture.
Afra and Tobia Scarpa were among Italy’s most influential postwar designers, celebrated for their masterful understanding of materials and their ability to combine engineering with timeless elegance. Their work for Cassina, Flos, Knoll, Gavina, and B&B Italia helped define twentieth-century Italian design, and today their creations reside in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Louvre, and numerous museums throughout the world.
Professionally restored to museum-quality standards, this authentic Cassina Soriana represents an opportunity to own one of the defining masterpieces of twentieth-century furniture design. Its combination of sculptural form, luxurious new full-aniline leather, and iconic chrome detailing makes it equally at home in a sophisticated modern residence, luxury penthouse, architect-designed home, or serious design collection.

Why We Love It
Few sofas possess the unmistakable presence of the Soriana. The dramatic folds of supple leather, the polished chrome “corset” that embraces the cushions, and its impossibly inviting proportions have made it one of the most recognizable seating designs ever created. Upholstered in rich full-aniline oxblood leather, this example feels both timeless and contemporary—a museum-worthy icon designed to be lived in.
