Albert Haberer Cherry Wood Chair for Hermann Fleiner, Germany 1950s
-
Description
This Arts and Crafts chair is perhaps the most well-known model of German designer, Albert Haberer. The flexible backrest made of thin spindles, held together with the woven leather connection makes the design an immediately recognizable piece of German mid-century design history.
Wood is the most traditional material for furniture, it is organic, elemental, sturdy, and has become very stylish. While during the industrial revolution, furniture manufactured from materials such as steel, aluminium, glass and plastic, began to appear, wood has remained a staple material in furniture manufacturing, especially in Europe. The design of this chair offers plenty visually with a striking construction and personality. The fan shaped backrest is composed of wooden spindles with a horizontal top. A beautiful detail is the leather connection woven between the spindles and secured with screws that also gives the backrest both strength and flexibility. The masterfully sculpted and symmetrically arranged individual spindles undeniably define the look, but the seat and legs are also very appealing. The seat has an appealing oval shape with sculpted edges to accommodate the sitter, while the legs are splayed to provide stability. The expertise of Hermann Fleiner is evident in the woodworking and overall execution of this chair, with a precisely sculpted and assembled structure.
Whether it is an armoire in the family room or a chair in the dining room, wood furniture manufacturers of the mid-20th century managed to combine the eternal beauty and practicality of wood. The timeless pieces such is this Albert Haberer model, are sure to last several lifetimes without ever going out of style.
