Alvar Aalto Tank Arm Chair Model 400 in Sheepskin, Artek 1950s

$ 33,600
  • Description
    A mid century Alvar Aalto “Tank” chair, model 400, produced by Artek in the 1950s. This example has been fully renovated and newly upholstered in first grade sheepskin that beautifully complements the warm tone of the birch legs and sculptural armrests. A confident yet understated statement piece that integrates effortlessly into both modern and more traditional interiors.

    The design was created by Alvar Aalto in 1936 for the Milan Triennale, where it was awarded a prize. The nickname “Tank” derives from the chair’s distinctive, wide armrests formed from laminated and bent birch, reminiscent of the protective tracks of a tank. The cantilevered frame provides a subtle spring, offering both flexibility and exceptional comfort. A technical innovation that feels as relevant today as it did nearly ninety years ago.

    Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was one of the most influential architects and designers of the 20th century. He designed furniture and lighting alongside his architectural projects, creating holistic environments in which every detail — from building to glassware — formed part of a unified vision. His work spans architecture, furniture, textiles, glass, sculpture and painting, though he considered painting and sculpture as extensions of architecture rather than separate artistic pursuits.

    From the 1920s through the 1970s, Aalto’s career evolved from Nordic Classicism to Modernism, and from the 1940s onward, toward a more organic and human-centered expression. Together with his wife Aino Aalto, he helped define Scandinavian modernism at its most refined. His pioneering use of bent plywood and laminated birch had a lasting impact on mid-century furniture design worldwide.

    Today, Aalto’s works are highly sought after by collectors and institutions alike. His designs continue to appear in important private collections and major museums, underscoring their enduring relevance and timeless appeal.
