Description
A true cornerstone of modern design, the iconic Stool 60 by Alvar Aalto and Aino Aalto for Artek represents one of the most important innovations in 20th-century furniture. Originally introduced in 1933, this deceptively simple stool redefined how furniture could be made, shipped, and lived with.
At the heart of the design is Aalto’s revolutionary L-leg construction—a method of bending solid birch into a seamless right angle. This example clearly showcases the layered bent plywood legs, a key indicator of authenticity and one of the most celebrated breakthroughs in modern furniture design. The legs are not only structurally brilliant but visually expressive, revealing the honest beauty of the material.
This particular example features a black laminate top, offering a striking contrast to the warm natural birch frame. Durable, versatile, and endlessly functional, Stool 60 can serve as seating, a side table, or a sculptural object within a space.
Authenticity & Markings
Our example is marked on the underside “Made in Finland” with an IFC sticker, further confirming its origin and authenticity. Details like this, combined with the correct layered leg construction, are essential markers for collectors.
Design Significance
Few objects achieve what Stool 60 has—remaining continuously in production for over 90 years while still feeling completely relevant today. Its ability to stack efficiently, adapt to countless uses, and integrate into any interior makes it one of the most successful furniture designs ever created.
Condition
In very good vintage condition with light, honest wear consistent with age. The black laminate top presents beautifully, and the birch frame retains a warm, natural tone. This piece has been cleaned but has not been refinished.
Why It Matters
This is not just a stool—it is a foundation of modern design thinking. For collectors, designers, and purists alike, Stool 60 represents the perfect intersection of innovation, craftsmanship, and timeless form.
Price is for one stool. -
