Description
The Öresund sofa or bench, designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Karl Andersson & Söner in Sweden, is a rare and elegant piece that exemplifies the essential values of Scandinavian modernism: simplicity, functionality, and an honest use of materials. Originally conceived as part of the Öresund series in the mid-20th century, this model reflects Mogensen’s enduring commitment to accessible, durable design grounded in craftsmanship and usability.
Constructed from solid oak, the frame of the bench is both robust and visually refined. The oak’s warm, natural hue and prominent grain are complemented by a subtle patina developed over time, underscoring the quality and age of the piece. The oak has been worked with care, featuring finely rounded edges, crisp joinery, and a harmonious balance between vertical and horizontal elements. Brass screws are left visible, serving both structural and decorative functions—a practical touch typical of Mogensen’s approach to design, where nothing is concealed unnecessarily.
The seat and backrest are upholstered in a deep blue textile with a finely woven texture. This original fabric, in excellent vintage condition, introduces a rich contrast to the lighter oak frame and enhances the bench’s understated elegance. The seating proportions are generous yet compact, with a form that sits comfortably between domestic and institutional furniture—ideal for use in hallways, waiting areas, or as a supplementary seat in living spaces.
Measuring 132 cm in width, 53 cm in depth, and 70 cm in height (approximately 52 inches wide, 20.8 inches deep, and 27.6 inches high), with a seat height of 42 cm (16.5 inches), the bench is scaled to offer ergonomic support while maintaining a minimal footprint. Its dimensions and restraint in decoration emphasize Mogensen’s belief in furniture as a practical tool for daily living, not as a status symbol.
The Öresund model also illustrates the fruitful collaboration between Børge Mogensen and Karl Andersson & Söner, a Swedish furniture maker known for its unwavering commitment to sustainable materials and traditional woodworking. Founded in 1898, the company’s enduring legacy includes partnerships with many of Scandinavia’s most prominent designers, and their work with Mogensen is particularly significant in merging Danish and Swedish design sensibilities—bridging Danish functionality with Swedish material warmth.
In overall excellent vintage condition, this example of the Öresund bench exhibits only minor wear, with a beautifully aged frame and well-preserved upholstery. The visible brass hardware retains its natural finish, contributing to the piece’s integrity and authenticity.
