Description
Produced by Bureau Móveis in the 1960s, this pair of armchairs reflects the disciplined formal language of Brazilian modernism during a period of institutional expansion and architectural ambition. Originally commissioned for and owned by Infraero—the Brazilian government authority responsible for airport administration—the chairs embody the pragmatic refinement associated with public-sector design of the era.
The composition is structurally direct: a rectilinear hardwood frame defines the architecture of the chair, with squared arms and legs joined by visible stretchers that reinforce both stability and proportion. The geometry is deliberate and restrained, allowing the material to articulate the form without superfluous gesture.
Seats and backrests are upholstered in beige leather, introducing a measured softness against the rigor of the wooden frame. The upholstery’s neutral tone emphasizes the warmth and depth of the hardwood, while maintaining the chairs’ institutional clarity. The balance between linear structure and cushioned planes results in a presence that is both grounded and composed.
Both chairs remain in excellent condition, with minor age-appropriate wear consistent with careful use. The frames are structurally sound, and the upholstery presents well.
A pair distinguished not only by design integrity but also by provenance—materially honest, architecturally resolved, and tied to a significant chapter in Brazil’s modern infrastructure history. -
