Description
The seating designs of the architect/designer, Carl Gustaf Hiort Af Ornäs, have been gradually more and more recognized world-wide, which resulted in the recent exhibition titled “Forgotten Ornäs”. His designs, including this armchair, are defined by the homely curviness that defined mid-century design.
This exceptional armchair was designed by Carl Gustaf Hiort Af Ornäs and produced by his own company, Hiort Tuote Puunveisto in the mid 1940s. This model predates the Siesta model and is one of the Finnish designer’s most celebrated seating designs. With its outward pointing, lacquered and curved legs, this sumptuous armchair offers a striking silhouette from all angles. During his career, Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs developed innovative techniques to bend veneer in three dimensions, which gives the design its beautifully rounded backrest with the winged “ears”. The attached headrest is a delightful detail that, apart from its functional aspect, is a creative way to pull attention to the backrest and its curved ears. At the same time, the true highlight of this armchair is its original, spectacular green upholstery that remains in good condition.
The craftsmanship of Hiort af Ornäs is very visible in this model. The Finnish designer was very firm about two things regarding his chair designs: the sitting comfort and that the model must look good from every single angle. This armchair fulfils these principles, as even from the bottom, it showcases the elongated, tapered back legs that are visually captivating.
