A new classic in itself, ‘Sculptural Twist’ Bench by Dublin-born and Manhattan-based designer Carol Egan lies at the crossroads of past and future. Very minimalist in style, this bench was developed using 3D modeling software before being crafted entirely by hand. The amazing result defies the impossible: the 180-degree twist, contortion of a wooden plank, here multiplied by four, a form in fact achieved by the ancient art of wood-carving.
A graduate in architecture and design of Parsons NYC, Carol Egan creates new forms with a rigor towards minimalism, accentuating the purity of natural materials and classic design that can reside within traditional, contemporary and modern environments alike. Her work is a defense of craftsmanship, promoting the handmade and supporting bespoke fabrication and construction throughout her projects. This unique process allows for discovery and creation, for new methods and techniques that expand the possibilities inherent in the natural materials she celebrates.
In 2012, Carol Egan began developing a line of minimalist furniture, the timeless elegance of which has become iconic. A Special Mention as best contemporary piece was attributed to her by the PAD London jury in 2015 for her floor console and stools presented by Galerie BSL. ‘As a designer, I’m interested in digital technology,’ says Carol. ‘I am fascinated by the process of creating complex geometries using 3D printer software to make prototypes during the design process. But what really excites me is when you combine this modern technology with traditional wood-carving. It’s in the hands of a refined craftsman, that each piece is truly made unique.’
