Description
A “Maralunga” lounge chair by Vico Magistretti for Cassina. Original caramel leather upholstery. Sourced in Northern Italy. 2 available, sold separately.
The Maralunga sofa, designed by Vico Magistretti for Cassina in 1973, is a classic piece of Italian modernist furniture celebrated for its innovative design and exceptional comfort. Its defining feature is an adjustable headrest, which can be raised or lowered to transform the chair’s profile and provide versatile seating options. This mechanism is both functional and aesthetic, giving the chair a distinctive, dynamic look.
The Maralunga’s soft, padded form is supported by a solid frame, offering both coziness and durability. It embodies Magistretti’s signature balance of elegance, simplicity, and practicality. Awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979, the Maralunga remains an iconic design in contemporary furniture history.
Vico Magistretti (1920–2006) was a renowned Italian designer and architect, celebrated for his influential contributions to modern design and furniture. Born in Milan, Magistretti studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and began his career working in urban planning before transitioning to product design.
Magistretti became known for his innovative approach, blending simplicity, functionality, and elegance. He collaborated with leading Italian design brands, including Cassina, Artemide, and Oluce, creating iconic pieces such as the Maralunga sofa, Eclisse lamp, and Atollo lamp. His work often utilized minimal forms and cutting-edge materials, exemplifying Italian modernism. -
