Description
The celebrated portfolio of Charles and Ray Eames continues to inspire designers to this day. Early in their mission to create furniture for the masses, the Eameses explored innovative materials, ultimately embracing molded plywood as the defining element of their post-war furniture collection. Their commitment to "honest materials"—wood resembling wood and metal resembling metal—was evident in their groundbreaking 1946 collection, which introduced Dining Chairs (DCW/DCM), Lounge Chairs (LCW/LCM), along with tables and case goods. Herman Miller became the exclusive distributor and manufacturer of these pieces by 1947. Though the Lounge Chairs were discontinued in the mid-1950s due to slow sales, Herman Miller revived the design in the 1990s, reaffirming its status as a classic.
This particular pair of contemporary edition Eames LCW (Lounge Chair Wood) Chairs features a stunning walnut veneer on molded plywood frames. The back and seat shells are secured to the frame with thermoset shock mounts, a signature innovation by Charles Eames. These shock mounts introduce flexibility, allowing the chair to adapt to the user's preferred sitting position while maintaining structural integrity. Our team has upholstered these chairs with great care in a recycled British Wool in the color Forest, a luxurious material from our collection of imported fabrics. The rich blend of deep green tones beautifully complements the original walnut frames, creating a timeless and elegant pairing.
The LCW's design, composed of just five pieces of molded plywood, exemplifies the Eameses' forward-thinking, timeless aesthetic. Simple, honest, and universal, these qualities are fully embodied in the LCW Plywood Lounge Chairs. Remaining in their original condition with only minor wear consistent with age and use, they are visually understated yet highly versatile. These chairs can serve as elegant lounge seating in a relaxed living space, occasional seating in a bedroom, or as a refined addition to a reading nook. -
