Description
Large Solid Mahogany Table, Brazil Model, Designed by Charlotte Perriand, Produced by Sentou, in the 1970s
This large geometric table features a substantial tabletop supported by four plinths, connected by a crossbeam. A piece of robust, architectural design, it perfectly encapsulates the aesthetic that Charlotte Perriand pursued throughout her career. Born in 1903 in the luminous Paris of the Belle Époque, Perriand made her mark after her studies and initial projects, leading to collaborations with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Her highly successful joint ventures with these designers laid the groundwork for her subsequent professional and personal independence. Perriand broke free from the norms and conventions of her time, both as a woman and as a designer. She was lively, curious, and possessed an enviable tenacity that led her to numerous travels and constant experimentation.
This piece, designed in the early 1970s at the peak of her career, embodies a style refined to the essence of structure through the elimination of decorative elements. Within this framework, the materials used take on primary importance. The solid mahogany used for the tabletop and legs evokes exotic reminiscences, reflected in the name "Brasil" chosen by the designer to highlight how every living space is truly permeable to the influences of life, travel, and other cultures.
