Description
Created by Cor de Ree during a period marked by a break from traditional creative conventions, this sculptural bench combines unconventional materials and bold forms that challenge the boundaries of furniture design. Dutch post-modernism embraced humour, irony, and a playful approach to design, making this piece not only functional but also a statement that serves to inject energy and individuality into any space.
This bench holds a strong expression with its interesting shape and design. The backrest is formed by overlapping contours that curve near the edges. This curvature is juxtaposed by the sharp armrests that splay outwards at the ends, creating visual interest. Cor de Ree often played on the edge of architecture and sculpture, and this piece perfectly shows this. The look is almost industrial, yet has the edge of post-modernism. Thanks to the material combination - copper, zinc and stained glass - the impression of this piece is fresh with a retro touch, and completely alluring with its dedication to quality and practicality. The copper’s aesthetic charm is undeniable; its rich patina and varied finish can transform ordinary interiors into unique spaces. Its quiet strength and handcrafted character make it more than mere seating - it is a reflection of a design period unafraid to combine utility with expressive structure.
For collectors and designers alike, a bench like this one is a testament to the Dutch exploration of unique forms and enduring materials, offering a blend of sculptural impact and everyday livability.
