Description
Scandinavian modern design is renowned for its timeless principles of minimalism, functionality, and impeccable craftsmanship—qualities that continue to influence furniture today. Designers like Hans Wegner and Finn Juhl defined the era, setting the trends for what was considered modern and desirable. Inspired by these icons, many independent cabinetmakers and furniture studios of the time produced their own exceptional pieces, often commissioned by boutique shops eager to offer their interpretations of these sought-after designs. Based on our research, we believe this beautifully crafted walnut settee exemplifies such independent design—a custom piece of Scandinavian Modernism, likely commissioned by a boutique importer in Montréal during the mid-century period.
Despite extensive research, we found no other examples of this settee, suggesting it may be unique or extremely rare. We undertook a full restoration to preserve its exceptional design, drawing inspiration from Finn Juhl’s floating elegance, seen in the "Chieftain Chair," and the lightweight aesthetics of Hans Wegner’s work. The walnut frame, with its tapered legs and sculptural armrests, has been expertly refinished, while the cushions—upholstered in KnollTextiles’ ultra-plush Puff fabric in Cloud—appear to float within the frame, creating a soft contrast to the robust wood.
This settee is stunning from every angle, making it both a functional and artistic addition to any space. Every aspect celebrates mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship and the skill of boutique manufacturing. -
