Danish Cabinetmaker Armchairs with Beech Tapered Legs, Denmark 1940s

$ 10,450
  • Description
    The difference between Danish mid-century and other furniture is that there was this partnership between the designer and the cabinetmaker that resulted in ground-breaking creations. These Great Danes believed furniture should be shorn of aesthetic detail and be an amalgam of form and function.

    This pair of armchairs represent this sentiment both aesthetically and from a technical point of view. Denmark was a special instance of tempered industrialization, preserving sound traditions and safeguarding values of craftsmanship, materiality and usability. The gentle shape, ergonomic construction and perfect proportions show the thought and expertise that went into the creation of these chairs. The support is robust, yet the design appears light, while the slightly enveloping body creates the much coveted “hygge”, the soft cosiness and warmth. The bodies have a welcoming look, with an open construction and slightly bent backrests. In service of utmost comfort are the thick seat cushions that ensure sitting comfort, with the textured, soft wool blend upholstery elevating it even further. The green colour and texture of the fabric complements the tapered beech legs beautifully, highlighting their refined lines. This pair of armchairs is an elegant and comfortable evidence of the mastery and artistry of the Danish cabinetmaker, who, with his contemporaries largely defined mid-20th century modern seating.

    The maker of this pair parlayed the wood into a modern, minimal, organic design that is soulful and timeless. These chairs’ main values are aesthetic refinement, economy of materials, usability, durability based on the tradition of arts and crafts.
