Description
Strongly influenced by the functional forms of the Bauhaus school, Danish designers led the way in furniture design during the 1950s. They combined the inspiration brought by new industrial technologies with minimalist design. This style became so influential that it is recognized as a design movement in itself, entitled Danish Design with a subgroup known as Danish Modern.
This elegant pair of easy chairs is an interesting example of the modernist movement that was about to shape Scandinavia’s furniture design for the coming decades. Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen such as cabinetmakers. Resting on four short, stained beech feet, the strong lines and proportions of the chairs are perfectly balanced. Like the legs, the bodies of these chairs are squared as opposing to the predominantly rounded lines of later designs. This angular style provides elegant lines that are not shorn of functionality; the seats are generously stuffed, while the backs are softly tilted, creating a cosy look that provides great comfort, fulfilling the fundamental design principles of exceptional sitting comfort. Quality craftsmanship was evidently of optimum importance for the cabinetmaker who created these chairs. The element that truly elevates the modern outline of these chairs’ is the upholstery. The light, luxuriously soft fabric is exquisite and pairs with the design’s straight lines very well.
From every single angle, these chairs offer stunning lines and rich texture. Above all, Danish designers believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. Looking at this pair, this was evidently not too far-fetched of an ideal.
