Description
Designer: Edward Wormley
Manufacturer: Dunbar
Model: 6793
Period: Mid-20th Century
Materials: Mohair upholstery, solid mahogany bases
A refined and inviting pair of Edward Wormley for Dunbar club chairs, model 6793, exemplifying the designer’s masterful balance of tailored modernism and understated luxury. These generously scaled lounge chairs feature elegantly sculpted barrel backs with subtle channel tufting, softly flared arms, and deep, supportive seat cushions—offering both visual sophistication and exceptional comfort.
Upholstered in the original rich sapphire blue mohair, the chairs possess a luminous depth and soft hand that beautifully accentuates the architectural contours of the form. The mohair’s natural sheen catches the light, enhancing the vertical tufting and curved silhouette with a dynamic play of texture. The chairs have been extraordinarily well preserved because they were kept covered in a private guest bedroom and were rarely ever used.
Each chair rests on a finely crafted solid mahogany base with a dark, warm finish, elevated on cylindrical legs with a continuous stretcher support—an uncommon and desirable detail that reinforces the design’s structural clarity while adding a subtle visual weight.
A quintessential example of Wormley’s enduring collaboration with Dunbar, this pair reflects the highest standards of mid-century American design—where comfort, craftsmanship, and elegance converge.
Ideal as a statement pair in a living room, study, or lounge setting, these chairs bring a timeless sophistication and a bold yet refined color presence to any interior.
The chairs were custom commissioned in the early 1960s by a family whose home was thoughtfully furnished with exceptional examples of Dunbar furniture throughout.
