Description
This charming set of stylish dining chairs was born from a desire to create an aesthetic that was organic and cosy in its simplicity while not compromising on comfort and functionality. The design, reminiscent of Charlotte Perriand’s “Dordogne” chair model, incorporates subtle, yet stunning decorative elements on a base that European mid-century designers liked to call “honest design”.
This set of eight stands as evidence why many European architects succeeded at the craft of furniture design: the precision of the structures and the rush weaving is evident at first glance, showing great geometric order. Driven by function, the designer’s focus was evidently on practicality, structural stability, and a design in favour of these principles. This set’s aesthetic is defined by the thick wooden lines and the minimal structures framing the woven rush seats. The backrests showcase the only strictly ornamental details, the carved spheres decorating the backs. Albeit small, this detail adds a lot to the overall visual balance of the design as it counters the dominating straight lines. The structure of the design has an airy and organic look thanks to the open backs and box stretchers. The overall design of these chairs is reminiscent of the French brutalist pieces of the era with the additional charm provided by the expertly woven rush seats. This design element pairs beautifully with the solid wood bodies, and gives this set’s pieces their rustic and organic look. Next to the beautiful wood, the use of straw is the defining material of this pair. Noteworthy for its organic charm, the material is also beloved for its functional qualities. The seats are made with a traditional hand woven technique, where the twisted strands of fibre are wrapped around each corner of the seat in a continuous loop. The four parts comprising both the backrests and seats create a visually pleasing pattern that highlights the material. These armchairs have an equally arresting solid wood structures that show great craftsmanship as well.
Defined by clean, smooth lines, and excellent joinery, each of these dining chairs was created by skilled craftsmen who made sure they are durable, sturdy, and functional, while their expertise and use of high-quality wood and rush make each piece stand out on its own as well.
