Description
This exceptionally rare armchair is the work of Emanuele Rambaldi, who is primarily known as a painter who participated in one of the first movements of modern art in Liguria, Italy. In addition to being a painter, he was a draftsman and etcher awarded with important national and international awards. His few surviving furniture designs showcase his artistic capabilities just like his paintings.
The design of this armchair is characterized by a refined understanding of material and form. It has a more traditional design language with clean lines and a solid construction, infused with the Italian and international artistic influences of the 20th century. In the design, Rambaldi cultivates a controlled, cultivated and logical sense of proportions and structure while utilizing the natural possibilities of wood. Therefore, there is a great balance of lines and use of the natural beauty of the fruitwood, which is especially apparent in the sculpted backrest and arms. Thanks to the numerous individual elements the back and lower structure are composed of, the overall impression is light and airy with inherent elegance. The stretchers between the legs are arranged cleverly, the wider front stretcher balances the backrest perfectly. The seat is composed of a closely woven cane panel that adds a lot of material interest to the design. The sleek tapered legs complete the look, infusing it with modernity and even more light elegance. This chair was manufactured by A. Canciani in Chiavari, Liguria.
Emanuele Rambaldi represents one of the most original and lyrically intense voices of Ligurian painting of the 1920s. He was a sensitive observer of the new influences that crossed the Italian and European pictorial culture in the 20th century, which stands true for this armchair as well. His sensitive and clear artistic approach is evident, making this rarity of seating design an invaluable addition to any space.
