Description
The “Amiral” is undoubtedly Swedish designer, Eric Merthen’s most famous model. The uncompromising philosophy based on which this chair was created poses high demands for craftsmanship and attention to the smallest details.
The design of this slender and elegant lounge chair is visually a reinterpretation of the classic safari chair. Designed for IRE Möbel, this lounge chair is a stunning composition of an exotic wood frame with leather belts and strapping. There are no visible screws or joinery securing the leather to the frame, showing the outstanding artistry. The upholstered arms, back, and seat are suspended seemingly effortlessly, supporting each other structurally. The slung support system is not only ingeniously designed, but also offers an extremely comfortable seating experience. The original patinated leather cushions bloom over the frame showcasing both the material and the peculiar design. While the overflowing edges dictate the look, this chair offers entirely unique details from every single angle. On the back, the four belts supporting the seat become visible with painted metal buckles. The four wooden caps sitting on top of the elongated back and front legs draw attention to the beauty of the exotic wood’s colour variation and pattern. The tapered legs cement the chair’s sleek look by balancing the voluptuous body. This “Amiral” lounge chair is anchored in traditional Swedish tradition, with innovative twists that make it a modern icon.
The manufacturer, Ire Möbel was founded in 1939 in Skillingaryd, Småland by the entrepreneur Gerhard Ihreborn. He and his colleagues were inspired by their vision - to produce high quality furniture with long life and good timeless modern design. The goal was never high volumes but dedication to quality. This high-end chair was the manufacturer's flagship at the time.
