WRINKLE PLANET – KNITTERPLANET - stool medium size

$ 3,480
  • Description
    This is the new sculptural seating project by celebrated Italian/Austrian artist ESTHER STOCKER, executed by Viennese boutique furniture manufacturer KOHLMAIER MANUFAKTUR. "Knitterplanet" or "Wrinkle Planet" is a sculpture that can be used to sit in. The user can create a whole landscape of settees. A folded fabric structure turns the topography into a surreal object. The artist calls into question the assumed rigidity of a system while challenging the perception of the viewer. KNITTERPLANET seeks to fold and distort the ordered space in a way that breaks with strict geometry.

    Sizes can be made bespoke and reach from 50 x50 x 50 cm to extended sit-on furniture landscapes of the size of 400 x 200 x 90-120cm. Every single unit is made as a unique copy and numbered and signed by the artist.

    Examples of sizes and prizes:

    KNITTERPLANET STOOL small: approx. 56 x 56 x 50 cm ($ 2,380)

    ESTHER STOCKER is well known for her optically complex spectrum of geometrized sign and grid systems. These systems are kept exclusively in black-grey-white. She deliberately subverts our perception and disorientates our senses so as to release the viewer from what he/she knows of physics and accept a new sensory experience.
    The works by Esther Stocker are pure abstractions, extracted from minimalist media such as the horizontal, the vertical, and the diagonal of space.

    Esther Stocker (born 1974, South Tyrol, Italy) studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan and at the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena, California. Since the end of the 1990ies, her works have been widely exhibited in international solo and group shows.

    KOHLMAIER MANUFAKTUR was established in 1884 as an upholstery family business. Since then the company has developed into a high-quality made-to-order furniture business creating bespoke pieces for architects, interior designers, and private clients. The philosophy is: contemporary design combined with traditional handcrafting. Any upholstery vision and extraordinary ideas can be accomplished. Distinctive solutions are generated for the special needs of sophisticated designers and architects and their clients. Profound knowledge of the specifics and the hidden secrets of old and new furniture are the key ingredients for Peter and Bernd Kohlmaier to produce the furnishing for exhibitions, events, bars & restaurants and cultural institutions. Their own collection of furniture has been evolving for a few years in close cooperation with cutting-edge Austrian designers and is for the first time available here via Marion Friedmann Gallery.
