Description
Designed by Frank Gehry in 1972 as part of the Easy Edges series, the Wiggle Side Chair represents a radical exploration of material and form within American design. Gehry, widely recognized for his groundbreaking architectural work and later iconic buildings such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, began his career experimenting with unconventional materials and everyday objects. Originally conceived in the early 1970s and later produced by Vitra, the design challenges established hierarchies by transforming humble corrugated cardboard into a structurally robust and visually dynamic medium. The chair’s undulating silhouette, defined by its rhythmic vertical curves, reflects both an architectural sensibility and an intuitive approach to mass and movement.
Constructed from layered cardboard with hardboard edges, the chair demonstrates a deep understanding of material behavior, where repetition and compression generate unexpected strength. Its sculptural profile blurs the boundary between functional object and artistic statement, embodying the experimental spirit of 1970s design. As both an iconic and influential work, the Wiggle Side Chair remains a key piece in Gehry’s early career and in the broader evolution of experimental furniture design. -
