Description
The postwar years saw unprecedented creativity in French design as evidenced by these chairs. Like most European mid-century designers, French designers were also convinced of the power of good design, with Charlotte Perriand famously declaring, “The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living”.
This pair of lounge chairs holds a soft simplicity and a uniqueness in its appearance - light, clean lines with an air of romance. The peculiar shape of these chairs is unmistakeable thanks to the backrests that flow down to form the welcoming armrests. While the armrests sit low, therefore opening the seats, the chairs still give the impression of hugging the sitter. The upholstered bodies elevate both the visual and literal level of comfort with a warm, stylish aubergine coloured teddy mohair upholstery. During the 1950s, a new generation of designers started to experiment with new materials and shapes and this new mood of discovery vanquished the functionality of the immediate postwar period. What had been a question of urgency was now one of creativity and hedonism. These chairs also express this change of times with their open design, luxurious upholstery and lines beyond strict functionality.
While many French designers were embracing new industrial techniques and mass production, this pair of chairs’ designer evidently personally selected the materials and the cabinetmaker handmade them.
