Square Oak Stool by Gaskell & Chambers, England First half of the 20th Century

The stool belongs to the English Arts and Crafts tradition, a movement that placed particular value on solid materials, visible construction, and the skill of the craftsman. Produced by Gaskell & Chambers during the first half of the twentieth century, it reflects this interest through its solid oak construction and straightforward joinery.

The stool is constructed around a thick square oak seat supported by four splayed legs. All edges are softly rounded, balancing its otherwise strict geometry, while the broad surface allows the grain of the oak to become a decorative feature in itself, with irregular lines and knots giving each side a different character. The legs are particularly expressive, as they taper gradually toward the floor while curving slightly through their lower sections before ending in small turned ball feet. This shaping gives the stool a more animated silhouette rather than a conventional straight-legged construction. Horizontal stretchers connect the legs below the seat, further stabilising the frame while introducing another layer of visual interest through the open spaces between them. The warm tone and pronounced grain of the oak remain visible across every component, emphasising the unique character of the timber and the craftsmanship of the construction.

Compact yet full of character, the stool has the kind of versatility that makes small pieces of vintage and antique furniture particularly appealing in an interior. Its square top works naturally as occasional seating, but it can just as easily serve beside an armchair as a small side table or stand for an object.

Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The stool has recently been reconditioned. Due to the nature and age of the material, the item has some marks, scratches, and discolouration.
