Antique 19th Century Ash Abingwood Chairs by George Walton

This pair of ash Abingwood chairs was designed in 1896 by George Walton, together with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and used for the billiard room of Miss Cranston's tea rooms on Buchanan Street, Glasgow.

Walton designed the billiard room and shared the decoration with Charles Rennie Mackintosh. For both designers, this was their first commission from Miss Cranston, who was to become Mackintosh's greatest patron.

Miss Cranston sold the tearooms in 1919 and the chairs were purchased by T B Lawson the proprietor of Lawson's the most important jewelers in Glasgow. They stayed at Hill House (designed by C R Mackintosh) until the family sold it to the Royal Scottish Architects and moved to Dorset, England in 1973. These chairs were purchased directly from the family.

The color and patina is extraordinary. The rush seats were redone in the 1970s. The chairs are sturdy and comfortable.
