Description
Set of 12 black-stained ash wood chairs with hand-woven rattan cane, designed by Gio Ponti, model 646 Leggera, in 1951 and manufactured by Figli di Amedeo Cassina during the late 1950s.
The chair, designed by Gio Ponti in 1951, is instantly recognizable for its design, which has become synonymous with elegant style and a certain refinement in furnishing. A prominent feature in specialized articles, studies, and prestigious settings since its inception, incorporating it into a space today means maintaining the intimate connection between design and everyday life that Ponti consistently aimed to express throughout his career.
Named after the concept of lightness, the Leggera chair stands out for its clean lines and aesthetic purity, achieving a level of design elegance. This is attributed to meticulous engineering in the study of joints to ensure optimal weight distribution, combined with the thoughtful use of natural materials such as ash wood, renowned for its unique properties of lightness and flexibility.
This set of chairs showcases the characteristic interweaving of rattan cane with the traditional Chiavari knot, directly inspired by the craftsmanship of Ligurian chairs, which greatly influenced Ponti for this iconic project.
The offered set of chairs has undergone meticulous professional restoration, both in the cane weaving and the wooden structure.
