PAIR Italian Mid-Century Rationalist Armchairs, Sheepskin Coverings, G Terragni

A Rare, Elegant and Classic Modernist Pair of Hand-made Italian Mid-Century Modern Armchairs / Lounge Chairs in Enameled Wood, attributed to the Italian architect, Giuseppe. Terragni with Sheepskin Coverings, Italy, circa 1930. The chairs have pure, sober geometric lines and balanced forms and display an understated confident aesthetic. The sheepskins bring a relaxed, natural element. Dimensions of wood frames alone: H 26.75 x W 32 x D 28.

Rational Architecture (IArchitettura razionale) thrived in Italy from the 1920s-1940s. In 1926, a group of young architects – Sebastiano Larco, Guido Frette, Carlo Enrico Rava, Adalberto Libera, Luigi Figini, Gino Pollini, and Giuseppe Terragni (1904–43) founded the so-called Gruppo 7, publishing their manifesto in the magazine Rassegna Italiana. Their declared intent was to strike a middle ground between the classicism of the Novecento Italiano movement and the industrially inspired architecture of Futurism.
