Gustavian Style Painted Trågsofa with Carved Base, circa 1920
-
Description
A graceful Gustavian style trågsofa from Sweden, dating to circa 1920. This piece features a painted black wooden frame with richly carved apron and legs, exhibiting the neoclassical influence that defines Gustavian design. The bench-like silhouette, known as a trågsofa (literally “trough sofa”), is gently enclosed on three sides, creating a cozy and structured seating area.
The carved skirt showcases an intricate ribbon motif running along its full length, punctuated by classical rosettes above each leg. The turned and fluted legs are elegantly tapered, adding lightness to the overall form.
Upholstered in a natural, hand-stitched linen with visible tacks and deep tufting, the seat and back cushions offer tactile warmth that contrasts beautifully with the structured base. Two matching bolster pillows complete the look. This sofa is a standout in both refined and rustic interiors, offering history, elegance, and comfort in perfect balance.
Seat: 66"W x 22"D x 17"H
