Pair of Early 20th Century Swedish Gustavian Style Carved Armchairs
-
Description
A wonderful pair of Gustavian style armchairs from Sweden, dating to the early 20th century, masterfully carved and full of timeless neoclassical elegance. Each chair features a square backrest topped with a decorative crest of carved ribbons and rosettes, while the frame is richly detailed with beadwork, fluting, and classical motifs emblematic of the Gustavian tradition.
The frames are made of carved wood with a pale, dry-scraped finish that highlights the depth of the ornamentation and imparts a soft, chalky patina. The armrests are gracefully curved, supported by baluster-style uprights, and the seats rest on turned, fluted legs with carved rosettes at the corners and leaf motifs on the knees.
Upholstered in a natural-toned linen or linen-blend fabric, these chairs balance formality with softness and would be stunning in a living room, study, or entryway. Their quiet beauty and architectural presence make them both functional and sculptural.
A classic pairing of Swedish restraint and French influence—decorative, refined, and enduringly stylish.
