Description
Henning Kjaernulf’s characteristic “Razorblade” chairs are the designer’s most distinctive model. This set of four was manufactured by the Danish company Nyrup Møbelfabrik in the 1960s, making it a true Danish mid-century set.
It is easy to see where the nickname of these chairs stems from. The slightly reclined backrests are razorblade-shaped, an unparalleled feature that makes the designer’s pieces immediately recognisable. The chairs are visually stimulating, featuring both angular and rounded shapes. The style and shape of the legs and frame recall an almost Baroque design, which is paired with Scandinavian modernism, an uncommon yet impressive combination. The legs are connected with box stretchers, with the exception of the front legs that feature geometrical carvings. Under the seats there are similarly carved aprons. These forms of subtle ornamentation elements make these chairs charming, while also showing off the oak’s natural qualities and the crafters’ artisan skills. The natural wood grain and colour is complemented by the light fabric of the seats.
The strong Danish tradition of carefully considered design and master craftsmanship were carried well into the second half of the 20th century. These expertly sculpted, light oak pieces with the titular Razorblade backrests provide a bold and iconic look that cannot be mistaken for any other designer.
