Description
Danish modern design was originally developed in the mid-20th century and was influenced by the German Bauhaus school. Drawing on the Scandinavian tradition of quality craftsmanship, simplicity and functionalism, many Danish designers used new industrial design techniques to form a basis for the industrial production of their designs.
This sofa possesses design elements that define Scandinavian mid-century modernism, including its gentle, cosy aesthetic, and use of quality materials. In accordance with Scandinavian design traditions, this sofa is made of refined materials with a rustic feel, such as solid wood and a light fabric. At the same time, It showcases an angular structure that gives a feeling of strength and durability. The oak frame is carved and sculpted in a distinct way, reminiscent of Henning Kjærnulf’s designs, thus showcasing the skills of the cabinetmaker. The elegant, lightly textured upholstery of the seat and back cushions beautifully complements the oak frame. The design consists of three upholstered cushions, framed by the armrests which connect to the front legs. The woodworking shows the overall quality of this sofa: the frame is distinct, and the attention to detail truly shows the design and manufacturing skills of the cabinetmaker.
Although very little is known about Henning Kjaernulf, his works reveal quality craftsmanship throughout - featuring clean Danish modern-era lines, with sculpted edges and shapes. The unique shapes of his pieces - like this sofa’s frame - distinguish the designers’ influence from other Danish mid-century designers.
