Pair of Adjustable "Digamma" Armchairs by Ignazio Gardella, Italy 1960s
-
Description
The postwar boom years of the 1950s through to the 1960s were one of the periods of greatest influence of Italian designers. Design in the 60s paved a way to a more aesthetical approach to products as opposed to its utilitarian predecessors, resulting in exceptional pieces like these armchairs.
In the 1960s, together with Gavina, Ignazio Gardella created these innovative "Digamma" armchairs. This model is versatile and functional with a strong personality, characteristic of Italian modern design. There are several features that show different style elements starting with the fully upholstered, sculptural body and tapered metal legs. With the outward pointing armrests and the dynamic lines of the seating, the chairs combine modern forms and ideals to obtain a timeless, impressive piece of furniture. Furthermore, the burnt orange mohair fabric adds a rich and luxurious look and feel, with the deep, warm hue of the upholstery creating a sense of opulence, making it an ideal choice for an eye-catching interior. The mohair’s tone enhances the sculptural qualities of the form, contrasting the crisp, linear frame with a plush, inviting surface. On the decoration front, the chairs aren’t in need of much thanks to the brilliance of the design itself, therefore the sole decorative element is the subtle rouching of the armrests on each chair.
The design was created in the golden days of Italian mid-century modernism, when Italian design giants like Gio Ponti and Paolo Buffa worked as well. With an outstanding design, quality materials and Italian design elements, this pair is sure to provide comfort and style in any interior.
