Italian Primitive Plank-End Bench in Elm, 17th Century

$ 5,764
  • Description
    The bench asserts itself through volume and the eloquence of exposed timber. The back is formed of thick, solid boards laid horizontally, the marks of the original tooling still legible across their surface; the sides, each cut from a single wide plank, rise at either end into twinned scrolled profiles that terminate in small carved volutes. At the base, the side panels open into two splayed points that serve as feet, lending the piece an almost architectural stability. At 117 cm high and 183 cm long, this is a bench on the scale of entrance halls and refectories.

    The whole piece is made from solid elm, with thick boards where the grain runs uninterrupted. The back and seat boards are tenoned into the side planks, the through-tenons visible and flush on the outer face of each side. There are no lower stretchers: the load is carried entirely by the two plank ends. The patina runs warm, an amber brown, with darker deposits concentrated along the joinery lines and within the narrow gap between the seat boards.

    The bench belongs to the tradition of seventeenth-century Italian regional furniture, where carpentry and function define form more than any decorative intention. The scrolled tops and the shaped silhouette of the side planks are a recurring feature of entrance benches and common-room seating of the Italian Seicento, a measured residue of form within an otherwise essential structure. Pieces of this kind furnished vestibules, refectories and transitional rooms, and their survival almost always depends on the timber they were made from: elm, tough and resistant to everyday use, was a recurring choice for hard-wearing seating and working benches.

    Professionally restored and refinished. The structure is consolidated and fully stable in use, with through-tenons intact and joinery sound. The surfaces carry the marks of time and historical use (small cracks, rings, slight irregularities across the seat) which have been retained and harmonised in cleaning. No intervention has been made to disguise the antique nature of the piece.
