Description
This low lounge chair presents a relaxed yet carefully balanced presence, defined by its compact proportions and open structure. The profile is deliberately understated, with a low seat and gently inclined backrest that create a sense of ease while maintaining a clear architectural rhythm. The lightness of the frame allows the chair to occupy space without visual heaviness, making it suitable for both intimate interiors and more open settings such as verandas or rooms facing the sea.
The structure is crafted from bamboo and rattan, shaped into a continuous, load-bearing frame articulated through curved legs and closely spaced vertical canes. The weaving is precise and regular, reflecting a confident command of traditional techniques. The natural material is left visually legible, its warm tone and surface irregularities contributing to the chair’s character. The seat is complemented by a black leather cushion, whose deep colour and organic, almost shield-like shape introduce a striking contrast. The leather adds both comfort and a subtle note of visual tension, distancing the piece from more decorative or purely ornamental wicker furniture.
Produced in Italy in the post-war period, the chair reflects a broader cultural moment in which vernacular materials were reinterpreted through a modern sensibility. The use of rattan and bamboo speaks to a long-standing artisanal tradition, while the clarity of form and restrained construction align the piece with mid-century explorations of informal living and flexible domestic spaces. The design favours honesty of materials and function, resulting in an object that feels both familiar and quietly contemporary.
The chair is in very good condition. The rattan and bamboo structure is sound and well preserved, with minor signs of age consistent with use. The black leather cushion has been restored and reupholstered in keeping with the original colour palette and overall aesthetic of the piece, ensuring visual coherence while respecting its character.
The chair is sold individually. A total of three matching chairs are available.
