Description
This rare four-seat sofa exemplifies Joaquim Tenreiro’s radical redefinition of modern seating in postwar Brazil, where structure, lightness, and human scale were treated as inseparable design concerns. Designed and produced by Tenreiro Móveis e Decorações in the late 1950s, the sofa reflects Tenreiro’s mature language—architectural yet restrained, expressive yet rigorously disciplined.
The armless, elongated form emphasizes horizontality and openness, allowing the piece to read as an architectural plane rather than a conventional upholstered object. Supported by a solid hardwood structure—recently reinforced to preserve structural integrity—the sofa sits lightly on tapered legs, a hallmark of Tenreiro’s pursuit of visual levity and spatial clarity.
The loose seat and back cushions have been newly upholstered in a deep blue velvety textile, selected to complement the sobriety of the wooden frame while enhancing comfort. The seating experience is notably generous and relaxed, offering supportive depth without excess softness—true to Tenreiro’s belief that comfort should be intelligent, not indulgent.
Retaining its original manufacturer’s label, this sofa stands as a documented and highly collectible example of Brazilian Modernism at its most refined. -
