"Pullman” Sofa in Deep Olive Mohair with Rosewood Buttons by Jorge Zalszupin

$ 25,000
  • Description
    A refined expression of late Brazilian modernism, the “Pullman” sofa by Jorge Zalszupin captures the designer’s signature balance between architectural clarity, material sophistication, and contemporary comfort. Produced in Brazil by L’Atelier during the 1970s, the model reflects a period when Brazilian design was increasingly responding to the growing corporate and executive office market—spaces that demanded furniture that was both visually refined and deeply functional.

    The sofa’s composition is deliberately disciplined. Its long, horizontal profile is defined by broad rectilinear arms and a structured seat platform, giving the piece a grounded architectural presence. The silhouette is softened through subtle curvature across the back cushions, creating a gentle rhythm that runs across the entire span of the sofa.

    Upholstered in deep olive green mohair velvet, the surface reveals a dense, short-pile nap that absorbs and reflects light with remarkable depth, producing tonal shifts that move between forest green and moss hues depending on the viewing angle. The upholstery is articulated through a precise network of radial stitched channels that converge into the original Brazilian rosewood buttons, each carefully integrated into the tufting pattern. These rosewood elements introduce a warm organic contrast to the rich textile while subtly referencing the material palette central to Brazilian modern design.

    The stitching is particularly distinctive: delicate seam lines radiate outward from each button, forming subtle geometric segments across the backrest. This tailored pattern creates a restrained sculptural effect—neither overly decorative nor purely minimal—allowing the upholstery to function as both structure and ornament.

    The seat cushions are proportioned generously but maintain a crisp, disciplined geometry. Their subtle tufting ensures the surface retains its shape while reinforcing the sofa’s overall horizontal emphasis. Below, discreet cylindrical metal feet elevate the form slightly from the floor, lending a lightness that contrasts with the sofa’s substantial mass.

    Zalszupin conceived many of his later seating designs with evolving professional interiors in mind. As Brazilian business culture expanded through the 1960s and 1970s, furniture like the Pullman model offered a new visual language—modern, sophisticated, and internationally oriented while still grounded in Brazilian craftsmanship and materials.

    The result is a piece that reads as both executive and residential, equally suited to contemporary interiors seeking a statement of restrained luxury.

    The sofa retains its original L’Atelier manufacturer’s seal beneath the frame, confirming its production and authenticity.

    Reupholstered in deep olive mohair, the piece now highlights the richness of its form and materials while remaining faithful to the refined aesthetic vocabulary of Brazilian modern design.
