Description
An iconic statement of Brazilian modern design, the “Pullman” sofa by Jorge Zalszupin exemplifies the designer’s ability to merge architectural discipline with tactile material richness. Produced in the 1970s by L’Atelier, the model reflects the evolving sophistication of Brazilian interiors during a period when design increasingly addressed both executive environments and refined residential spaces.
The silhouette is defined by its broad rectilinear arms, low horizontal profile, and deep seating, giving the piece a strong architectural presence while maintaining visual restraint. Zalszupin’s approach favors clarity of structure: the long-upholstered volume appears almost monolithic, softened only by subtle curvature across the back cushions and precise tailoring that articulates the upholstery.
This example has been newly upholstered in burnt caramel mohair velvet, a tone that moves between cognac, rust, and deep amber depending on the direction of light across the velvet’s dense nap. The fabric’s short-pile texture produces a refined matte sheen that highlights the sofa’s sculptural surfaces while reinforcing the warmth associated with Brazilian modern interiors.
A distinctive element of the Pullman model is its tufted backrest construction, where carefully placed stitching radiates outward from solid Brazilian rosewood buttons. These original wooden buttons introduce a subtle material contrast while reinforcing the handcrafted character of the piece. The radial stitching creates quiet geometric segments across the cushions, adding visual depth without interrupting the sofa’s clean architectural lines.
The seat cushions are generously proportioned yet tailored with discipline, maintaining the sofa’s crisp geometry while ensuring comfort and durability. Discreet cylindrical metal feet elevate the structure slightly from the floor, giving the design a sense of lightness despite its substantial volume.
Zalszupin’s furniture from this period was frequently conceived for the growing corporate and professional environments of Brazil’s expanding economy, where modernity, elegance, and durability were essential. The Pullman model embodies this philosophy—simultaneously executive in character yet versatile enough to anchor a contemporary living space.
Reupholstered in luxurious mohair while preserving its original rosewood buttons and structural geometry, this example remains faithful to Zalszupin’s vision while presenting the piece in a refreshed and highly collectible condition. -
