Description
A highly sculptural pair of Vienna Secession ebonised armchairs, dating to circa 1900 and attributed to Josef Hoffmann.
The chairs are distinguished by their boldly modelled, sweeping arms, which extend forward in a fluid, architectural gesture, contrasting with the grounded, rectilinear base. This interplay between structure and curvature is characteristic of Hoffmann’s early exploration of form within the Secession movement.
The design reflects the transition from historicism to modernism at the turn of the century, where clarity of construction is softened by expressive line. The sculptural quality of the arms, in particular, demonstrates a refined understanding of proportion and movement associated with the Wiener Werkstätte.
Retaining a strong visual presence while remaining highly functional, the chairs have been newly upholstered and are ready for use.
A rare and compelling pair, equally suited to anchoring a contemporary interior or complementing a more classical setting. -
