Description
This very rare sofa, attributed to Danish architect and designer Kaj Gottlob, exemplifies the seamless integration of tradition and modernity that defines early Scandinavian modernist design. Produced in Denmark, the piece is an eloquent expression of Gottlob’s approach—merging understated architectural form with artisanal execution, grounded in functional clarity and material richness.
The sofa is constructed with a solid beech frame, offering both structural strength and visual warmth. The beech wood, visible in the slender legs and subtly contoured support structure, has been carefully shaped to create a light and elevated profile. The legs taper delicately, lifting the body of the sofa in a way that enhances its elegant proportions and gives it a graceful, almost floating presence.
The seat and back are upholstered in high-quality Niger leather in a warm cognac tone, a natural material prized for its depth of color, durability, and tactile richness. The leather, aged naturally over time, exhibits a refined patina with subtle creases and tonal variation that lend authenticity and character to the piece. This natural wear enhances the sense of lived-in comfort without detracting from the visual integrity of the design.
The form is restrained yet sculptural, with gently flared armrests that offer a nod to classical silhouettes while maintaining a modernist sensibility. The linearity of the frame is softened by the generous cushions, which provide both firm support and visual balance. Ergonomically considered and proportioned with care, the sofa is as comfortable as it is refined—suitable for both residential and formal settings.
Though attributed and not definitively documented, the design closely aligns with Kaj Gottlob’s known aesthetic values. As a key figure in Danish functionalism during the first half of the 20th century, Gottlob (1887–1976) brought a measured architectural eye to his furniture designs. His works are often marked by precise joinery, minimal decoration, and an emphasis on natural materials—characteristics evident in this sofa’s construction and material palette.
In good vintage condition, the piece shows signs of age and use that enhance its vintage character. The leather displays an appealing, even patina, while the beech frame remains structurally sound and visually consistent. Minor surface wear is present but appropriate to its period and authenticity.
This sofa is a rare and compelling example of early Danish modernist furniture, distinguished by its quiet sophistication, impeccable craftsmanship, and connection to one of Denmark’s most respected early 20th-century designers.
