Zen Lounge Chairs designed by Kwok Hoi Chan for Steiner

Description
An iconic pair of “Zen” lounge chairs designed by Kwok Hoi Chan and produced by Steiner, France, during the late 1960s. Exemplifying the sculptural innovation of the Space Age and late modernist period, each chair features a continuous molded form with an open cantilevered base and deeply contoured seat. The design eliminates traditional legs and frame articulation in favor of a unified architectural silhouette, creating a functional object that also operates as a sculptural presence.
Each chair is constructed with an internal molded structure and generous foam padding, fully upholstered in textured off-white boucle fabric in perfect condition. The ergonomic curvature supports a relaxed, reclined seating posture while maintaining visual lightness through its open base geometry. Chan’s Zen chair is widely regarded as one of the most refined and collectible examples of late modernist seating design.
Kwok Hoi Chan’s work for Steiner represents a pivotal moment in postwar European design, reflecting an embrace of new materials, experimental forms, and the integration of art and function. His designs remain highly sought after by collectors and are held in important private and public collections. -
