Description
Freestanding, demi-lune banquette designed by Marc Newson, 1 of 9 commissioned for Canteen Restaurant in Soho New York. Originally upholstered in brown fabric, this example has been reupholstered in an orange knitted, new-old stock fabric by Racine, a French company that was in operation in the mid 20th century. The banquette is shown with an original Komed table that is also available.
Canteen opened in 1999 by owners John McDonald and Josh Pickard along with chef Matthew Kenney. McDonald was the first American entrepreneur to commission Newson for design in New York, preceding McDonald's Lever House Restaurant that also had interiors by Marc Newson. As shown in the second to last image, Canteen was furnished with round orange Komed tables that were paired with the cantilevered banquettes, as well as square Komed tables paired with orange upholstered Komed chairs. -
